The 7 deadly sins

(for Cacti Lovers)

In spring

  • To put plant after the dormant time immediately in the sun. It causes serious burning and they also may die.
  • To put plants into the open too early. After relatively moderate and constant wintering temperatures plants are spoiled and react sensitively to changes in temperature. In fall, though, many plants can be act in temperatures as low as degrees below zero without being harmed.

In summer

  • Transplanting plants without loosen firm root packs. Plants which aren't replanted for a longer time show without loosening slow growth of new roots after replanting. Also there are often parasites in the roots and you should have a close look at this : there might be root lice, nematodes, or an other enemy. To heal root damage caused by loosening leave the plants some days in warm air (but no sun) before replanting.
  • To ask a friendly neighbour to look after your plants during your holiday. Afraid to make a mistake mostly the result is too much watering and you will find your cacti drown. Generally speaking: In the hot time of the year many species of plants want to have a resting time and may react negatively against water. (i.e. Living stones, Old man cactus a.o.) During holiday your plants will do best in half shade and can survive a few weeks without water with no problem.

In fall

  • To put the plants in their winter-quarters without checking for pests and treating them. In dry air pests can multiply in great number.
  • To put plants with wet roots in the winter-quarter. Depending on the size of the pot plants should be kept in a dry light place after the last watering for some weeks.

In winter

  • Shocking plants with cold air. Especially plants which come from warm climates ( like plants from Madagascar, from Brazil or certain Euphorbia species). Airing in winter can be a deadly shock for such plants
Generally speaking, watering only the bottom of the pot and avoid to moisture the surface is a sure method against winter problems, because the neck of the roots doesn't like the combination of water and cold air!
